CONRAD AFFIRMS OF A HIGH-DROP RATE IN MEGHALAYA

HEADLINES

Shillong: The drop-out rate in the state is one of the matters which the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government has tried to deliberate on in detail by also trying to come up with measures on how to control it.

The MDA Government which has successfully completed four years of governance in this state which has crossed the milestone of 50 years of Statehood, has found and seen that a high number of students drop-out during their educational journey.

Responding to a query on this matter, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Kongkal Sangma said that the MDA has come across and found that there are several reasons for students dropping out of their studies.

The first reason is the financial incapacity of the families of these students in supporting their children’s higher education expenses in colleges due to fewer and/or the lack of educational institutions, and on the basis of this the MDA Government, in whatever capacity it can, has begun by moving forward to support People’s Colleges.

Furthermore in rural areas, poor income is another hurdle which closes all doors for students in continuing with their studies, which as a result of the inability of families to financially support them, the majority of children and teenagers have no choice but to seek employment at an early age so that they may support and add to the income of their families.
