CM Urges MLAs to Stay in House for Clear Responses on Border Issue

HEADLINES

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has urged all MLAs to remain present in the Assembly and attentively listen to the government’s response to ensure clarity on crucial issues.

He made this remark while replying to discussions on the state’s border issues on Monday, which was raised by Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem. Several other legislators, including those from Rambrai, Mawsynram, Mowkaiaw, Jirang, Mawhati, Kharkutta, Nongkrem, Mawkyrwat, and Shella, participated in the discussion.

Sangma emphasized the need for patience among MLAs, stating that he takes time to provide comprehensive replies. He pointed out that some members often claim they do not get enough time to speak, and staying in the House ensures they receive a detailed and transparent response.

Addressing the border issue with Assam, the CM acknowledged the longstanding complexity of the matter, which dates back to Meghalaya’s statehood. However, he assured that his government has taken firm steps to move forward and resolve disputes.

Sangma further highlighted that the government is not sitting idle but is actively investing in border areas to boost development. Regarding the Border Area Development Programme (BADP) along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border, he stated that the Ministry of Home Affairs had put the scheme on hold since 2022, but the state government continues to follow up on the matter.
