Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, seeking support for the New Shillong Township, which will house a new Administrative City. The mega project aims to alleviate congestion in Shillong city, which has faced severe overcrowding leading to nightmarish traffic conditions throughout the day. The city’s old roads, nearly impossible to expand, regularly witness extensive traffic snarls due to the overwhelming influx of both local and outside vehicles.

“After meeting the PM, I shared the vision of establishing the New Shillong Township and Administrative City. We plan to build a new administrative city and a new secretariat, presenting the designs and seeking his support to ensure the project’s progression,” Conrad said.

Additionally, the CM briefed the PM on the state’s developmental works, ongoing programs, their status, and the overall progress.

“I submitted a brief report and delivered a presentation, which pleased him greatly as he observed the diverse developmental works occurring in the state. He particularly appreciated the substantial increase in the state’s developmental budget, nearly tripling over the last 5-6 years from its previous levels,” he mentioned.

Conrad conveyed his government’s vision for the state in the upcoming 5 years, emphasizing the necessity of the PM’s support to achieve this vision.

“PM Modi was pleased with these developments and assured us of his complete support,” Conrad stated.

The CM also met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, updating her on the status of various projects funded through the Capital Investment Fund provided by the Government of India for externally aided projects in different states.

He urged the Finance Minister to further support the state in its externally aided projects, highlighting the government’s positive performance.

“We requested an increase in the ceiling for such projects, considering Meghalaya’s substantial undertaking of various projects due to our commendable performance,” he explained.

The Finance Minister responded positively to the state’s request, assuring continued support.
