Shillong: The Assam government has closed numerous illegal roadside shops between Jorabat and Byrnihat for allegedly causing floods in the area. The non-tribal have started to set up their shops on the Meghalaya side of NH-6 under the 15 Mer, Ri Bhoi.
Following the incident, the FKJGP (Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People) Byrnihat Circle has made efforts to prevent similar setups in Meghalaya’s border areas.
Led by leader Kitborlang Suting, Organizing Secretary of the FKJGP Byrnihat Circle, and Lumlang Mawnai, Vice President of the FKJGP NKHD, members of the FKJGP 15 Mer Unit conducted a raid on these illegal shops. The group issued immediate warnings to the shop owners, demanding they vacate the area.
Suting, speaking to the media, made it clear that the FKJGP will not allow the non-tribal from Assam to set up their shops in Meghalaya.
