Former MLA Mohendro Rapsang on Tuesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saying his decision was driven by a desire to contribute to the growth and development of Meghalaya and the country.
Speaking after formally joining the party, Rapsang said he had reflected on his political future following his defeat in the 2023 Assembly elections and decided that the BJP would provide him with a platform to continue serving the people.
“After the 2023 election, where I lost my seat, I reflected on my future in politics. Today, I am joining the BJP for the growth of the state and the nation. That is my aim,” he said.
Rapsang expressed confidence that the BJP’s support base is steadily expanding in Meghalaya, including among tribal and minority communities. He said the party’s growing acceptance could strengthen its prospects in constituencies such as West Shillong.
“People are starting to vote for the BJP. Even tribals and minorities are supporting the party. I believe the party’s acceptance is growing, and that will benefit us in the future,” he said.
On his political ambitions, the former legislator said he is currently focused on strengthening the party organisation and would leave any decision on contesting future elections to the BJP leadership.
“Every election is a challenge for anyone who contests. I will remain committed to the BJP and work for the party. If the party finds me fit to contest in the future, I will do so. I leave that decision to the party leadership,” he added.
Rapsang’s entry into the BJP is expected to bolster the party’s efforts to expand its footprint in Meghalaya, particularly in urban constituencies, as political parties gradually begin preparing for the next Assembly elections.
