HEADLINES

Shillong: Following reports of the deaths of two youths undergoing Agniveer training at the Assam Regimental Centre in Happy Valley due to suspected meningococcal bacterial infection, Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla on Tuesday said the State Health Department has taken immediate preventive and containment measures to control the situation.

Shylla clarified that the two deaths occurred over a period of two weeks and not at the same time, urging the public to remain calm and avoid panic. He said samples from the affected individuals have been collected and sent for laboratory testing to confirm the exact cause of the infection.

The minister said rapid response teams have been deployed to the area and are closely monitoring the situation in coordination with military authorities. He added that contact tracing has been initiated and individuals who had close contact with the deceased trainees have been identified and placed under quarantine as a precautionary measure.
