Shillong: Shillong MP Dr. Ricky AJ Syngkon has raised alarm over the rising tide of crimes, noting that they are no longer confined to urban spaces but are increasingly affecting rural communities as well.
Expressing deep concern, Dr. Syngkon urged citizens, local bodies, churches, and the state government to collectively shoulder responsibility and act swiftly against such incidents, which have created fear among children and elders alike. He stressed that in today’s times, crimes of this nature are unacceptable and must not be tolerated.
The MP highlighted that lack of adequate employment opportunities and the economic vulnerability of many families are among the root causes driving criminal activity. He noted that Meghalaya has one of the highest rates of women-headed households, with 41% of women solely managing family needs — covering nearly 42% of the state’s population. This, he said, underscores a grave social challenge that requires urgent redress.
Dr. Syngkon also appealed to faith-based institutions and community groups not to distance themselves but to take part in collective responsibility to safeguard society. On the issue of drugs, he stressed the need for a deeper probe into why narcotics are flooding into Meghalaya, stating that the matter cannot be brushed aside as mere chance but must be tackled at its roots.
