Police Must Empower Themselves to Protect: Lapangap Residents Urge Government

HEADLINES

Shillong: Tension gripped Lapangap village in West Jaintia Hills after farmers were allegedly shot at with air guns by suspected Karbi miscreants while working in their fields on Thursday.

According to reports, the incident occurred when local farmers were tending to their crops and were suddenly fired upon by individuals suspected to be Karbis. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.

The Rangbah Shnong of Lapangap said Assam Police later drove the Karbi group away, but expressed concern that Meghalaya Police personnel only patrol midway and do not extend their coverage to the farmlands where such incidents take place. He added that this lack of security has created fear among villagers who depend on farming for their livelihood.

The villagers have urged the Meghalaya Government to take immediate steps to strengthen border security and ensure the safety of farmers working in sensitive border areas.
