Shillong: Tensions have escalated in East Garo Hills after an FIR was lodged against officials and contractors involved in the alleged forcible acquisition of land for the widening of National Highway 217. Local residents have accused authorities of proceeding with construction work without proper consent, compensation, or rehabilitation measures.
Villagers claimed their land was taken over for the highway project despite objections, and alleged that attempts to raise concerns were ignored. Community members now plan to approach the courts, saying the matter violates their rights and undermines due process.
Legal experts assisting the affected residents said petitions are being prepared to challenge the acquisition before the judiciary. The controversy adds to growing disputes across the region over infrastructure development and land rights.
