India joined 142 countries at the UN General Assembly in voting for the New York Declaration, a resolution supporting the creation of an independent Palestinian state and calling for urgent action to end the Gaza war. Ten countries voted against the motion, while 12 abstained.
The declaration, introduced by France and Saudi Arabia, condemns Hamas for its October 7, 2023 attacks on Israeli civilians and urges it to release all hostages, surrender its weapons, and end its rule in Gaza, paving the way for governance by the Palestinian Authority with international support. It also proposed a temporary UN-led stabilisation mission in Gaza to protect civilians and oversee the transition.
India, which first recognised Palestine in 1988, reaffirmed its long-standing support for the two-state solution. The vote precedes a key UN summit in New York on September 22, where France is expected to formally recognise Palestinian statehood.
The resolution’s clear condemnation of Hamas was seen by analysts as strengthening the position of supporting nations against Israeli criticism. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated there will be no Palestinian state under his leadership, while reports suggest Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas may be unable to attend the summit after being denied a US visa.
