Shillong: Members of the All Khasi Hills A’chik Federation (AKHAF) held a rally on Monday demanding the construction of National Highway that passes through the South West Khasi Hills.
The rally that started from Maheskhola and ended in Shallang aimed to highlight the urgent need to improve the roads, particularly those that serve as major sources of income for the local population.
AKHAF leaders expressed their deep concern about the current condition of the roads, which have made the area more inaccessible and negatively impacted daily life. They said that improving the national highway would benefit the entire region.
During the rally, the union criticised the contractor responsible for the construction of the road from Maheskhola to Amarsang, pointing out that corruption had been uncovered as the road has begun to deteriorate, despite having been completed only a few years ago.
In light of these issues, the union has demanded that the relevant department conduct an inquiry and hold accountable those involved in the road’s construction. This demand is not only from the union but also reflects the concerns of many residents in the area.
