Increasing traffic jams in city due to Police Personnel shortage: Shillong Traffic

HEADLINES

The Meghalaya State Planning Board (MSPB) on Monday has seek information from various state government departments to address the ongoing traffic congestion in Shillong.

The departments consulted include Public Works (PWD), Urban Development, Police and Transport Department.

Board Chairman, Metbah Lyngdoh said the meeting is to identify the root causes of Shillong’s traffic jams and explore possible solutions for the benefit of the public.

During the discussions, the police department cited a shortage of personnel as a key factor contributing to the traffic problem, stating that with only 150 traffic police officers, seven police stations and 400 Home Guard personnel, it is challenging to effectively manage traffic across the city.

This staffing limitation is one of the reasons the Board will be submitting its recommendations to the government.

Lyngdoh also suggested that relocating government offices to a new city could help alleviate traffic pressure in Shillong. While the Board plans to provide its recommendations, he said that the final decision on relocating lies with the state government.
