Shillong: In an effort to uphold tradition, the Wahrew or Wah Mru community has revitalized their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage, which has been passed down through many generations.
On March 23, 2024, the Seing Riti Institute in Wahkhen organized a Cultural Show aimed at showcasing the rich history and traditions of the village dating back to ancient times.
The event featured a variety of cultural activities, including the performance of traditional dances such as pynshad khun u kpa and ka kmie, as well as demonstrations of ancient customs like ka tied kdor ban beh ia ki mrad ba pynjot ia ki jingthung. These activities were presented by members of the Sieng Riti Institute, womenfolk, and other participants.
Additionally, the Cultural Show included displays of ka ksing lumpaid, sha ka shad skaiñ, sha ka shad kiew ing thymmai, and ka phawar kyntiew kurim. The rhythmic songs, or Phawar, were sung with such beauty that they filled everyone present with a sense of joy for the cherished culture preserved through the ages.
The Cultural Show served as a testament to Wahkhen’s recognition by the government as one of the model villages dedicated to preserving cultural heritage, including folklore music and other traditions under the initiative of Mr. Komik Khongjirem, the National Awardee of Sanget Natak Akademi, New Delhi.
The event drew hundreds of spectators, including dignitaries like Kordilin Thangkhiew, Programme Executive of Akashwani, Shillong. Among the notable speakers at the event were Jansing Tynsong the Sordar of Raid Wahkhen, and the advisor of the Seing Riti Institute, Babu Kular Khongjirem.
