Meghalaya is no longer on the Uranium mining map: HSPDP

Shillong, August 03: The leaders of the HSPDP today the 3rd of August met with the senior officials of the Atomic Mineral Directorate(AMD) for clarification on the re-emergence of the Uranium mining issue in Meghalaya.

The President of the HSPDP, K.P Pangniang informed that in the meeting with the Regional Director of the AMD, Dr.Prahar Kumar at his office in Nongmensong, a clarification was sought on whether the Indian Government still has a plan to mine uranium from Meghalaya.

Pangniang informed that Prahar said the AMD is like the Ministry incharge of minerals all over the country, however uranium mining is handled by the UCIL, and he also said that Indian Government no longer has any programme to touch the uranium in this area.

Pangniang also further said that the decision taken by the Government of Dr.Mukul Sangma in August, 2016 had clearly stated that the aim to mine the mineral from Domiasiat under South West Khasi Hills District has been removed.

On this matter, he also said that the senior officials of the said department have given their word that Meghalaya is no longer in the Uranium mining map.
