Shillong, March 15: A severe hailstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall struck several areas under Ranikor Block in South West Khasi Hills District on Sunday evening, damaging houses and affecting over a hundred families.
According to information received from Bah S. Marwein, MCS, Block Development Officer (BDO) of Ranikor Block, the hailstorm occurred on the evening of March 15, 2026. The intense storm caused widespread damage as large hailstones battered homes across the region.
Preliminary reports indicate that at least 118 households were affected by the storm, with an estimated 700 to 800 people experiencing the impact. Many houses reportedly suffered significant damage, with roofing sheets and structures shattered due to the heavy hail.
The villages that were hit by the hailstorm include Nongkulang Thadteja, Pormawdar, New Mailom, and Amarsang, among others.
Local authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and compiling reports from the affected villages. Relief measures and assistance are expected to be initiated following the completion of the assessment.
