Shillong : The World Bank will support the initiative of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in maintaining cleanliness and the importance of waste management.
The World Bank has also agreed to support initiative of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for the maintenance of cleanliness in villages falling under its jurisdiction.
This development was informed by KHADC Chief Executive Member Titosstarwell Chyne. The CEM said this is the first step towards implementing the initiative.
On emphasis of waste management, CEM said he will soon call for a meeting with all village leaders so the Council along with the Village leaders will constitute Village Solid Waste Management Committees in their respective villages.
CEM Chyne said they had come up with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (Solid Waste Management) Act, 2020 with the intention to work closely with the various villages and localities for the maintenance of cleanliness.
Earlier, the executive committee of the KHADC had constituted a Solid Waste Management Cell (SWMC).
The SWMC will facilitate, carry out and oversee the implementation of the Act and Rules framed and formulate policy, guidelines, norms, standards and orders for effective implementation of solid waste management in the entire jurisdiction of the council.
It will also ensure provisions for the setting up of centers for collection, segregation and storage of segregated wastes besides encouraging formation of self-help groups to provide training on solid waste management and involve communities in waste management at community-level to control and maintain hygienic conditions.
