Nongpoh: A 40-year-old daily wage worker died after reportedly falling from a height of around 20 feet while dismantling the roof of the Yummy food factory at 10th Mile in Ri-Bhoi district on Wednesday evening.
According to police sources, the deceased has been identified as Ratul Deka, son of Pradip Deka and a resident of Kulmabari in Morigaon, Assam. The incident occurred at around 6 PM while Deka was working on a roof beam as part of renovation work at the factory, which falls under the jurisdiction of Khanapara Police Station.
Deka reportedly fell along with a beam from a height of approximately 20 feet and sustained serious injuries, particularly to his head. The report also raises concerns over whether adequate safety equipment and protective measures had been provided to workers carrying out the dismantling work.
His co-workers rushed him to the nearby ARHI Hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries. Police subsequently shifted the body to Civil Hospital, Nongpoh, where a post-mortem examination was conducted on Thursday.
Khanapara Police returned to the factory on Thursday to inspect the work site, examine the safety arrangements and determine whether appropriate protective equipment had been provided to the workers. Police are also looking for the contractor who brought the labourers to the site as part of their inquiry.
