A woman was injured after she was allegedly attacked with a sickle during a mobile phone snatching incident at Umkdait in Nongmensong on Monday night.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 9 pm when the woman, who is from the Garo community, was returning from her workplace at Reliance Trends and walking along the road towards Lumshyiap.
The accused allegedly approached her and snatched her mobile phone. When she resisted, he reportedly attacked her with a sickle, injuring her in the neck.
The assailant attempted to flee following the attack but was intercepted by people in the locality and subsequently handed over to the police.
The injured woman was rushed to NEIGRIHMS, where she is undergoing treatment.
Nongmensong VDP president T. Thabah said the woman is a tenant at Umkdait. He further said preliminary information indicated that a group of three to four suspected drug users had allegedly been active in the area.
The accused has reportedly been identified by some local residents as “Gunni.” Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
