Shillong, August 22: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Kongkal Sangma has affirmatively told the civil society organisations that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two States with regard to the border resolution between Meghalaya and Assam in the first phase will not be retracted. However, he said that the Government will try to speak again with the Assam Government in the process of the second phase.
The civil society organisations including the KSU, FKJGP, ADE and others today the 23rd of August met with the Chief Minister as well as the Deputy Chief Minister again to express their dissatisfaction over a major portion of the areas going to Assam in the first phase of the border resolution of 6 sites of dispute.
Speaking after the meeting, Conrad Sangma said that he had clarified and explained in detailed to the civil society organisations, whereby he also showed them the report of 2011 which states that villages which the civil society organisations expressed would want to be included in Meghalaya were already discarded in the report. He said that it is very difficult for the Government now to change the 2011 report.
He said that the civil society organisations have understood the difficulty of the Government, and the requirement to process the matter forward, however, he also said that the civil society organisations have still expressed concern over the wishes of the residents to be include in Meghalaya, and have urged the Government to try and speak again to ensure these areas are included in Meghalaya.
