Shillong: Wards Lake is set to be officially handed back to the Tourism Department. Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh announced the retransfer on Thursday, stating that the move was approved during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
To kickstart the revamp, the government has allocated Rs 28 crore for the first phase of redevelopment. Among the exciting additions planned are entertainment zones, leisure areas, cafes, and a star attraction — a musical fountain with a light show.
Lyngdoh also revealed that the lake will remain open to visitors until 10 PM, making it a new nightlife spot in the city. To manage the anticipated rise in tourist numbers, the approach road to the lake will be widened, with footfall expected to double once the upgrades are complete.
