The FKJGP Nongmensong has submitted a formal complaint to the state government, urging swift action to complete the construction of low-income housing units in Nongmensong, which have been left unattended till date.
Due to government inaction, these houses are now being used as hideouts by criminals and have become den of illegal activity.
The houses at Lumphira, Nongmensong, the housing complex consists of four blocks intended to accommodate 64 people. However, the units remain empty and have suffered extensive damage, including broken windows and vandalized interiors, which will now require additional government funds to repair.
In a letter addressed to Chief Secretary Sniawbhalang Dhar, FKJGP Nongmensong General Secretary Alan Kharkongor called for the completion of these units or at least securing the area to prevent them from being used as criminal hideouts.
Kharkongor said that the FKJGP will take further action if the government continues to ignore the worsening conditions in the area.
The project, initially aimed to house 600 low-income residents, saw its first 96 units inaugurated in 2012 by former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma under the Basic Services for Urban Poor scheme of JNNURM. However, the incomplete project has yet to fulfill its purpose.
