The Umlyngka 3rd Mile Taxi Drivers’ Association on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, officially launched an ambulance procured under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) for the financial year 2024–25.
The ambulance was formally inaugurated at the Umlyngka playground by Mylliem MDC Aibandaplin Lyngdoh Nonglait, who attended as the chief guest. Dr Batskhem Marboh, VPP candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, was present as the guest of honour, along with office-bearers of the Umlyngka 3rd Mile Taxi Drivers’ Association, VPP leaders, elders and invited guests.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Marboh thanked the association for taking the initiative to serve the public through the ambulance. He said the initiative reflected the vision of the late Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon, who had facilitated the ambulance to provide emergency medical services, particularly to people from economically weaker sections.
Addressing the gathering, MDC Aibandaplin Lyngdoh Nonglait said the ambulance was made possible through the goodwill and efforts of the late MP. She expressed gratitude that the locality and constituency had received a lasting contribution from the former MP despite his relatively short tenure in Parliament.
She also urged the taxi drivers to provide the best possible service through the ambulance, stressing the importance of humility and compassion in their interactions with patients. She said people who use an ambulance are often already distressed by their health condition and therefore deserve to be treated with care and dignity.
