Shillong: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is considering disciplinary action against legislators reportedly preparing to leave the party and join the BJP, with the matter expected to be taken up by the party’s Disciplinary Committee.
UDP General Secretary Titosstarwell Chyne said on Thursday that the party’s Disciplinary Committee would deliberate on the developments and decide what steps should be taken. His remarks come after Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla publicly claimed that eight UDP legislators had decided to join the BJP following discussions with its central leadership.
Chyne also indicated that the party could seek an explanation from West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh over his recent public remarks questioning the UDP leadership and party president Metbah Lyngdoh. Chyne criticised Lyngdoh for raising leadership issues publicly while, according to him, rarely attending party meetings where such concerns could have been discussed internally.
The developments come amid reports of a possible major political realignment in Meghalaya. Shylla has said eight UDP MLAs have agreed to join the BJP after seeking commitments on several state issues. The UDP currently has 12 MLAs, while the BJP has two in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly.
