Speculation over a possible move by around eight UDP MLAs to the BJP has intensified, with sources indicating that the proposed switch could take place as early as next week if the BJP agrees to a set of demands put forward by the legislators.
According to sources, the conditions reportedly include recognition of the Khasi language under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) or strengthening of the Meghalaya Residents’ Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), resumption of coal mining, and relocation of the Harijan community from Them Iewmawlong.
Other demands reportedly include granting minority status to the Seng Khasi and Seiñ Raij, easing Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) provisions for Christian organisations, and other issues concerning the state.
Another key condition is reportedly the allocation of four ministerial berths in the MDA-II government, which would require a reshuffle of the Council of Ministers.
The eight UDP MLAs reportedly considering the move are Lahkmen Rymbui, Mayralborn Syiem, Pius Marwein, Balajied Synrem, Olan Singh Suin, Matthew Beyond Kurbah, Synsharkupar L. Thabah and Kyrmen Shylla.
The number could rise to nine if Paul Lyngdoh also joins the BJP.
Sources further indicate that the UDP could be left with Metbah Lyngdoh, Nujorki Sungoh and Renikton L. Tongkhar. However, there are also reports that Nujorki Sungoh and Renikton L. Tongkhar could be considering a move to the NPP.
The developments remain subject to negotiations, and no formal announcement regarding the legislators’ political affiliations has been made so far.
