SHILLONG: Tura MP Saleng A Sangma has expressed doubts over whether the Centre will heed the concerns raised by the northeastern states and church bodies seeking greater flexibility in the implementation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Saleng said it was uncertain whether the Centre would accept the suggestions submitted by church organisations from the Northeast regarding proposed changes to the FCRA.
The FCRA regulates the receipt and use of foreign contributions by organisations, including Christian and other religious bodies.
Saleng said the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) could listen to the suggestions, but the final decision on whether to accept them before the proposed changes become law would rest with the Centre.
He described the proposed amendments as “draconian” and questioned the purpose of consultations if the government was not willing to consider the suggestions received.
