TREATMENT OF CLEFT LIP AND PALATE, THE FOREMOST GOAL FOR WOODLAND HOSPITAL, SHILLONG

Woodland Hospital, Shillong today organised a programme to deliberate on the defect of cleft lip and palate in infants and children.

In this programme which was held in Shillong Club were also present Dr.Gordon Rangad,Medical Superintendent of Nazareth Hospital, Dr.Hunsi Giri, President of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Professor C.Daniala, Medical Superintendent, NEIGRIHMS, doctors, general surgeons, plastic surgeons and doctors from Chennai.

Dr.Badmutlang Dympep, Plastic Surgeon of Woodland Hospital said that the reason that children get this defect is due to the pregnant mother being malnourished, leading to parts of the face becoming underdeveloped while the child is still in the womb of the mother which leads to children having problems in eating and not being able to speak properly.

Dr.Dympep informed that cleft lip and palate of children can be corrected and Woodland Hospital has been continuing with the correction of the cleft lip and palate for the past 10 years but there are many parents who are still scared of coming forward and having the cleft lip and palate of their children corrected, but as a doctor who has specialised in this, she said that parents should should get the correction on the children done in order to restructure their lips especially because as humans there will always be talks which can make the cleft lip and palate to be a source of embarrassment for them to come out of their houses.

From her end, she said that children under 18 with cleft lip and palate will get free treatment through funding from Smile Train, New York while for those who are 18 years and above, their treatment will be as per recognition from Smile Train.
