Mawkyrwat — The Special Judge (NDPS), South West Khasi Hills, has convicted three individuals—Somison Sangma, Gopal Borman, and Jenel D. Sangma—for illegal possession of Yaba tablets, sentencing each of them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1,00,000. In default of payment, they will face one month of simple imprisonment.
The conviction relates to a case registered on 19 January 2024, when a naka team intercepted three suspicious persons on two motorcycles travelling from Ranikor. Acting swiftly, the team detained them before the Duty Magistrate, Shri S. Marwein, and a police team from Ranikor Police Station arrived at the location.
A thorough search led to the recovery of nine packets containing a total of 1,728 tablets, suspected to be Yaba, a psychotropic drug. The case was registered under Ranikor PS Case No. 03(01) 2024 U/S 22(C)/29 NDPS Act and investigated by ABSI A. Syiemlieh.
A chargesheet was submitted on 3 May 2024, and after trial, the court delivered its judgment on 11 November 2025, holding all three accused guilty under the NDPS Act.
The Superintendent of Police, South West Khasi Hills, confirmed the conviction and sentencing through an official release.
