Tension at Mukroh as Residents Stop Assam Census Exercise, Assert Village Falls Under Meghalaya

Tension reportedly erupted at the disputed Assam-Meghalaya border village of Mukroh on Monday after local Khasi residents obstructed an enumeration exercise being carried out by Assam government officials.

According to reports, officials attempted to collect demographic information from households in Mukroh, also referred to as Mokru by Assam. Residents objected to the exercise, maintaining that the village falls under the administrative jurisdiction of Meghalaya and not Assam or the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).

During the confrontation, an enumerator was also allegedly threatened with physical harm. The circumstances surrounding the allegation remain to be independently established.

Residents argued that they have been receiving government benefits and assistance from Meghalaya for years, including housing support under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), while claiming that they have received no such assistance from Assam.

“We do not come under the jurisdiction of the KAAC or the administration of Assam,” a resident said, reiterating their opposition to the Assam authorities conducting the exercise in the village.

The incident has once again brought attention to the long-running boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam in the Mukroh area.
