The teachers association, Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teachers Association (MUPSTA) today organised a sit-in demonstration in different parts of the State such as in Jowai where the sit-in demonstration was held at the compound of the Indoor Hall of Dorbar Shnong Ladthadlaboh, while in Shillong, the sit-in demonstration was held in Malki Ground from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
The peaceful protest of the teachers is in part to pressure the Government into raising the salaries in 844 Adhoc Upper Primary Schools and of 3,376 teachers in the state to the category of ‘Deficit Pay’.
The leaders of the association from West Jaiñtia Hills Unit and East Khasi Hills District Unit said that this demonstration is a peaceful agitation and as adhoc teachers of the state, they have also taken the decision to intensify their protest in the coming months if the Government does not respond to their demands.
The teachers have urged upon the Government to pay the salaries of teachers on an equal pay equal work basis and if they have to resort to agitations every time then that will surely affect the education of the students and as a Government, they ought to promptly take due notice of this matter as is done for other government schools teachers.
