Lahkmen Rymbui has said that Shillong’s urban expansion is inevitable and will gradually extend towards Mylliem and Mawngap as development and connectivity improve in the coming years.
Speaking to reporters, Rymbui said that the growth of Shillong should not be viewed as being confined only to the New Shillong Township. Instead, improved road connectivity between various regions will naturally lead to the expansion of urban and economic activities into surrounding areas.
The minister highlighted the proposed road connecting Mawlyngad and Lad Smit, which will link with the New Shillong area, as a major infrastructure project expected to stimulate economic activity and improve connectivity.
He also pointed to the ongoing Western Bypass project as another key initiative that will contribute to the expansion and decongestion of Shillong.
According to Rymbui, the existing city has become increasingly congested, creating challenges for transportation, business activities and daily commuting. He said there is an urgent need to expand urban development beyond the present city limits to accommodate future growth.
The minister further stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, the government has undertaken major initiatives to strengthen infrastructure and public services in civil sub-divisions and block headquarters across the state.
He said the objective is to create economic and educational opportunities closer to rural communities, thereby reducing the need for people to migrate to Shillong in search of employment, services and quality education.
Rymbui added that the government is also investing in improving educational facilities in rural areas to ensure that students can access quality education without having to relocate to urban centres.
