Shillong, Nailur 13: The Minister in charge of Food & Civil Supplies, Comingone Ymbon has denied claims of a significant increase in food prices in the state. He added that the price difference between Meghalaya and other states is minimal.
He explained that the absence of a railway line is one of the reasons for the rise in goods prices, as Meghalaya relies on imported goods that are transported by road. However, he noted that prices of rice in Garo Hills are ₹13 per kilo lower than in Shillong, largely because Mendipathar in North Garo Hills has a railway line.
The Minister further stated that the price disparity within the state is due to road instability leading to Shillong, especially after heavy vehicles were banned from crossing the Umiam Dam.
His remarks came after the Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) staged a protest on September 13, criticizing the rising food prices. Responding to the protest, Ymbon claimed it was merely a political move by the VPP to mislead the public.
He acknowledged that price increases have occurred for some vegetables items and meat, as most commodities are imported from outside the state.
Additionally, the Minister assured that the department conducts regular inspections to ensure that shops display prices, and through the Deputy Commissioners’ (DCs) Price Monitoring System, efforts are made to prevent overpricing.
