ReFoam Meghalaya Launches Sohra Pilot to Promote Sustainable Waste Management

HEADLINES

The ReFoam Meghalaya initiative has launched the first phase of its pilot project in Sohra, aiming to build a sustainable and community-driven waste management model for tourist destinations.

The programme, led by the Bharat Ingenuity Foundation and Croasis Research Group with support from Supreme Petrochem Limited, began on March 16, 2026.

Awareness sessions were conducted across institutions including Cherra Teacher Training Centre, RKM Secondary School and Dorbar Secondary School in Laitmawsiang, engaging over 150 students. The sessions focused on waste segregation, self-composting and responsible consumption.

A school-level dry waste collection competition is currently underway, with students collecting waste until March 28. The collected waste will be analysed to better understand local waste patterns and design effective management systems.

In addition, a cleanliness drive at the Garden of Caves, Laitmawsiang saw participation from over 60 students and teachers, resulting in the collection of 32 kg of waste.

The initiative will conclude with a closing event on March 30, where key insights and future plans will be shared. The programme highlights the role of youth and community participation in preserving Sohra’s fragile ecosystem
