NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) has advanced to the Durand Cup 2024 final after a commanding 3-0 victory over regional rivals Shillong Lajong FC in their semifinal clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong, on Monday. This victory marks a significant milestone for NEUFC as they reach the final of the prestigious tournament for the first time in their history, having narrowly missed out in the previous edition.
The match was defined by NEUFC’s early dominance, with the team taking the lead in the 13th minute. Moroccan midfielder Alaaeddine Ajaraie played a crucial role, receiving the ball from a throw-in and delivering a deft backheel pass to Jithin MS on the left wing. Jithin’s low cross into the penalty area was met by Huidrom Thoi Singh, who slid in to finish and give NEUFC an early advantage.
Shillong Lajong came close to leveling the score in the 27th minute when a powerful strike from 20-year-old Wadajied Kynsai Ryngkhlem was deflected, appearing destined for the bottom corner. However, NEUFC’s goalkeeper Gurmeet pulled off a remarkable save, redirecting the ball just in time to concede a corner.
NEUFC extended their lead in the 32nd minute, albeit amid controversy. A precise long ball from Spaniard Nestor Albiach found Ajaraie, who controlled the pass with finesse and fired a shot that initially struck the post. As the ball rebounded to him, Ajaraie made no mistake with his second attempt, but the goal was initially disallowed for offside. After protests from NEUFC players, led by captain Miguel Zabaco Tome, the goal was ultimately awarded, sparking frustration among the home supporters.
In the second half, Ajaraie nearly scored again with a fierce shot from outside the box that narrowly missed the target. Despite strong backing from their fans, Shillong Lajong struggled to regain their early momentum and found it difficult to penetrate a resolute NEUFC defense.
Shillong Lajong’s hopes of a comeback were further dashed in the 90th minute when defender Ronney Willson Kharbudon was shown a red card for dissent. NEUFC took full advantage of their numerical superiority, adding a third goal in stoppage time. Substitute Parthib Sundar Gogoi capped off the victory by calmly finishing after a well-timed run down the left flank.
With this emphatic win, NorthEast United FC now looks ahead to the final, where they will face the winner of the second semifinal between reigning champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bengaluru FC, set to be contested at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Tuesday.
