Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said the government cannot provide jobs to all young people in the state on its own and that attracting companies to invest and create employment opportunities is essential for economic growth.
Speaking to reporters, Conrad said Meghalaya has set a target of achieving a USD 10-billion economy, but reaching that goal would be difficult without companies coming to the state to invest and generate employment.
At the same time, he stressed that development should not come at the cost of the environment. He said economic growth must be balanced with environmental protection, ensuring that the state’s natural resources and the land belonging to its people are not adversely affected.
Conrad said the government alone cannot provide employment to everyone, while increased private investment would expand job opportunities for young people in sectors such as hospitality, manufacturing and other industries.
He said the government’s responsibility is to strike a balance between development and environmental protection, ensuring that projects are implemented responsibly and that the benefits of investment and economic growth reach the youth of the state.
