SHILLONG, January 28: The State Government has approved the suggestions to be submitted for the amendment to the Sixth Schedule. The amendment suggestions are only for the MDC seats and the formation of Village Councils.
The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Kongkal Sangma said that with regard to the MDC seats, the State Government has suggested that in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), there shall be a maximum of 40 MDCs with 4 MDCs as nominated and the rest elected by the people. In the JHADC, it was suggested to have a maximum of 32 MDCs with 2 being nominated and the rest elected.
With regard to the formation of Village Councils, Sangma said that the Government has suggested to have Village Councils with the Headmen,the Sordars and Nokmas as Chairmen, while Secretaries and other members will be elected.
He said that the Government has taken this decision to submit the suggestions after having thoroughly discussed on the suggestions with all the stakeholders especially the Autonomous District Councils.
He said that the Government will send these suggestions to Delhi and the matter will be discussed again in his visit to Delhi which is scheduled for the next coming days.
Responding to a query, the Chief Minister said that the MDC seat for the unrepresented tribes will be removed and with regard to this, the Government has already discussed it with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
