NGO Leaders Visit Families Affected by Landslide in Nongspung B

HEADLINES

Leaders of the Hynniew Trep Youth Council (HYC) and Meghalaya People Social Organisation (MPSO) visited five families in Nongspung B village who were severely affected by a landslide caused by soil erosion from a hill, excavated by a private individual. The landslide damaged their homes and forced them to seek shelter elsewhere. The families, including those of Kong Lijanta Sungoh, Kong Premika Sungoh, Kong Wompher Dhar, Kong Mana Suting, and Kong Kerning Sungoh, have urged the responsible landowner to cover the costs of repairs.

According to the village headman, Bah Philimon Tongper, the landslide occurred during heavy rainfall in May or June, leading to severe damage as mud flowed into the homes and farmlands. The situation has rendered the houses uninhabitable, and the affected families have been displaced for months.

HYC leader Tony Shylla said that after learning about the incident through media reports, the organizations felt compelled to visit the village and offer support. They met with the affected families and the individual responsible for the excavation, urging him to take responsibility for the damage. In response, the landowner agreed to assist by reinforcing the area and preventing further soil erosion.
