The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) NEHU Unit have locked the office of the NEHU Registrar, Retd. Colonel Omkar Singh, following reports of his alleged unauthorized entry into the university premises.
According to NEHUSU President Sandy Sohtun, the decision to lock the Registrar’s office was made after an urgent meeting by the two student bodies. The action came after reports emerged that the Registrar had entered the university campus without prior intimation and arrived with a truck early in the day to move official belongings during non-operational hours.
Speaking to the media, Sohtun stated, “The Registrar has been entering the university without informing anyone, and today, after receiving information about his arrival, we decided to lock the Administration Office.”
The student bodies also visited the Registrar’s residence and found him packing belongings. He was instructed to vacate the premises immediately. However, they advised that if he needs to collect any remaining items, he must delegate the task to others and not return himself.
NEHUSU and KSU have also written to the Union Ministry of Education, urging them to expedite their response to resolve the ongoing issues at NEHU. The student unions have announced their plans to meet the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, seeking his intervention to press the central government for a resolution to the university’s administrative crisis.
