HEADLINES

Shillong, Sep 21: Students of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Tura Campus held a solemn candlelight gathering on Friday to pay homage to legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away on September 19 in Singapore.

Around 35 students, including those from Assam and other Northeastern states, assembled near the Garo Department Building with posters and candles, observing a minute’s silence to honour the late singer’s memory. Local Garo students also joined in, reflecting Zubeen’s influence that cut across linguistic and cultural boundaries.

Born in Tura, Zubeen’s music deeply shaped the identity of the region. “We cannot believe that he is no more. I grew up listening to his songs, and it is very sad for me,” said Bhargavi Saikia, a Food Technology master’s student from Nagaon. Her classmate, Sweety Das, added, “We have known Zubeen da since we understood what music is. My last wish is that his soul finds eternal peace.”

The tribute highlighted the anguish of fans across the Northeast, where Zubeen was not only admired as a singer but revered as a cultural icon. Known for his songs in over 40 languages, philanthropy, and activism, his passing has left an irreplaceable void.

Preparations are underway in Guwahati to receive his mortal remains, with thousands expected to pay their final respects at Sarusajai Stadium.
