Shillong: Ferdinand Lyngdoh who is a research scholar of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People(NCPEDP), came forward to urge upon the State Government to take steps from its end so that difficulties faced by people with disabilities can be removed.
Speaking with media persons today, Lyngdoh showed as an example on the roads, lanes and bylanes where they face several difficulties which extends to commercial vehicles on which there is no proper place to stand or sit properly.
Furthermore, Ferdinand Lyngdoh said that there are a few MLAs in the State when approached for help by the visually impaired people, the response they get is that they cannot even help the people who can see, so how can they help those who cannot see?
On this insensitive comment of the MLAs, Lyngdoh feels the need to say that such MLAs even if they are ready to help just help, and if they cannot just clearly say so.
Turning to the difficulties faced by people with disabilities, Lyngdoh would like to urge upon the State Government to take due notice and action for on many occasions these poor people cannot come out to the roads, lanes and bylanes or even use the commercial vehicles as they are not proper and safe for people with disabilities.
As fellow citizens, they are very much eager and desirous of also participating in the milestone celebration of 50 years of Statehood, added Lyngdoh
With regards to public transport, Lyngdoh would like to urge upon the State Government to provide a concession of fare for such people which can be implemented with the production of a verifying certificate such as the Unique Disability ID(UDID).
Furthermore, Lyngdoh expressed that the MLA of Umroi constituency has also raised a matter in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on how people with disabilities should get benefits in education or any other aspects.
