Shillong: The Department of Tourism and Travel Management at Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) observed World Tourism Day 2026 through a community outreach programme at Mawlong Village on September 24, ahead of the official occasion.
The programme began with a cleanliness drive at Mawlong Viewpoint, with students and faculty members of the Department of Tourism and Travel Management participating in the initiative.
This was followed by a Responsible Tourism Awareness Programme at Mawlong SSA RC LP School, attended by students, teachers and principals from Mawlong Presbyterian School and Mawlong SSA RC LP School, along with Mawlong Rangbah Shnong, Bah Andrew Nongrum.
The awareness programme focused on responsible tourism practices, with discussions highlighting the role of digital tools and technology in promoting sustainable and responsible tourism.
The initiative aimed to sensitise schoolchildren and community members to the importance of protecting Mawlong’s natural and cultural heritage. It also highlighted community participation, environmental responsibility and the responsible use of digital technology as key elements in promoting sustainable tourism.
