Shillong, Nov 25: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo moto cognizance of the alleged delay and indifference shown to two injured NEHU students following a serious road accident near NEHU Gate-II on November 17.
The commission has issued a notice to the Director of Health Services (MI), directing an enquiry and submission of a detailed report by January 7, 2026.
The victims, Stephanie Shadap (22) and Daritngen Ponduhkhei (20), suffered severe head and facial injuries after being struck by a speeding vehicle. Their families and NEHU students alleged that the Shillong Civil Hospital failed to provide timely attention when the duo arrived at around 8:15 pm, with one student reportedly left bleeding for nearly an hour.
The injured students were later shifted to Nazareth Hospital the same night after former Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh reached the scene. The MHRC said the allegations raised serious concerns regarding emergency care, prompting the commission to intervene.
