Shillong, November 1 – Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister, in charge of Transport, Sniwbhalang Dhar, announced plans to establish direct flights from Shillong Airport in Umroi to major cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Dhar shared that the state government will meet with the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation after the Gambegre elections to discuss the expansion of Shillong Airport.
While awaiting upgrades to the airport infrastructure, the state has already initiated a tender process to connect Umroi with these metropolitan destinations. In a September meeting with the Airport Authority of India (AAI), it was reported that an additional 16 acres of land could be added to the airport without requiring hill removal. The expansion will extend southward, with six acres reserved for aircraft parking and an additional 900 meters added to the runway to accommodate larger aircraft.
