Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed the Assembly today that the state has constructed 3,200 fish ponds over the past four years, from 2020 to 2024, at a total expenditure of ₹97.68 crore.
Responding to a question raised by Mawryngkneng MLA Heavingstone Kharpran, Sangma detailed that the funding for these projects comes from two schemes—one under the Central Government, which provides 60% subsidy and 40% as loans, and another under the State Government, where 60% is subsidy, 25% is farmer contribution, and 15% is loan.
For one acre of fish farming, the state government allocates ₹16 lakh under its scheme, while the Central scheme provides ₹12 lakh.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that Meghalaya currently produces 20,000 metric tons of fish annually but still faces a shortfall of 12,000 metric tons, which needs to be met through local production.
