Mawlai SC roared back into form after their stunning collapse to Shillong Lajong earlier this week by thrashing Laitkor 4-0 in the Shillong Premier League 2025 at the SSA Stadium, First Ground, Polo, on Saturday evening.
Goals from Robertson Khongriah (45’), Ricky Chyne (60’), Loving Suting (77’) and Damitre Kynjing (83’) secured a dominant win, propelling Mawlai back to the top of the standings with 15 points from seven matches. Nangkiew Irat (13 points) and defending champions Shillong Lajong (12 points) trail behind but both have a game in hand.
Mawlai showed resilience after their shocking 3-4 loss to Lajong, where they squandered a 3-0 lead. Although Laitkor began brightly with three shots on target inside the opening five minutes, goalkeeper Banshanskhem Kharsyntiew stood firm. Just before half-time, Robertson opened the account with a strike that clipped the upright before finding the net.
The second half saw Mawlai seize complete control. Ricky doubled the lead from a Kevin Rymbai corner, before Loving – the league’s top scorer with seven goals – made up for earlier misses with a clinical finish. Damitre then sealed the rout with a thunderous strike, his first of the season.
Despite chances, Laitkor could not penetrate Mawlai’s strong backline, with Sandy Kharkongor and others being denied by Banshanskhem. Keeper Hukumskhem Marbaniang, playing his first match of the season, also made key saves to limit further damage.
The result ends Laitkor’s three-match unbeaten run and leaves them in seventh place with eight points. Mawlai, meanwhile, reaffirm their title credentials with a commanding display.
The SPL 2025 continues Monday with Sawmer taking on Shillong Lajong at 4:30 PM.
