Shillong: A man from East Khasi Hills has expressed shock after discovering that his stolen mobile phone and SIM card were allegedly misused by unknown persons to demand money from members of the public in his name.
Speaking to reporters at the Shillong Press Club on Wednesday, Kyrshanborlang Thabah, a resident of Umrynjah, East Khasi Hills, said his Samsung mobile phone was stolen from Garikhana on May 21 this year.
Thabah said he was initially unaware of the need to file an FIR following the theft. However, on September 13, he received a notice from Jowai Police Station asking him to appear in connection with a complaint alleging that a SIM card registered in his name had been used to demand money from people.
He subsequently received another notice from Mawkynroh and informed police that his mobile phone had been stolen and that he had no knowledge of any money demands allegedly made using his number.
With the assistance of his friends, Thabah filed an FIR at Lumdiengjri Police Station on September 16 regarding the theft of his mobile phone. He also filed a separate complaint at Sadar Police Station over the alleged misuse of his mobile phone and SIM card for demanding money.
According to the FIR, three individuals have been accused of allegedly misusing Thabah’s SIM card to demand money. They have been identified as Daren Ksan Lyngdoh, a resident of Nongrah-Nonglum; Clarence Jason Rajee, from Nongrah-Brei; and Joevy, whose place of residence is not yet known.
Thabah said the amount allegedly demanded using the SIM card registered in his name has exceeded ₹5 lakh, leaving him shocked and concerned over the misuse of his identity and mobile connection.
