The East Khasi Hills district administration has intensified security measures in the Lum Survey area amid growing concerns over the proliferation of drugs and related criminal activities.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal on Tuesday inspected the area along with Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, Additional Deputy Commissioner Shanborlang Warjri, the CEO of the Cantonment Board, officials from MeECL and other concerned departments.
The district administration is preparing to strengthen security in the area and install CCTV cameras at strategic locations to monitor activities and prevent criminals from taking advantage of the situation.
The administration has also initiated a detailed verification of people residing in the area. The Deputy Labour Commissioner, along with officials from the Anti-Infiltration Directorate, has been tasked with verifying the identities of residents and checking their relevant documents.
The DC said the district administration cannot immediately clear or evict people from the area as the land falls under the jurisdiction of the Cantonment Board and the matter is also currently before the High Court.
Meanwhile, the district administration has directed MeECL to submit a report regarding allegations of electricity theft in the area.
