Shillong: Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui switched to Khasi while announcing his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in New Delhi on Wednesdayz
After speaking in English, Rymbui addressed the gathering in Khasi, stating that all eight UDP MLAs had joined the BJP and seeking the people’s support to fulfil the demands and aspirations of the people of Meghalaya.
Rymbui, a former Minister in charge of Education and Health in the Meghalaya Government, said the decision to join the BJP was aimed at pursuing several key demands, including the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), relocation of residents from Them Metor, lifting of the ban on coal mining, among other issues.
The eight UDP MLAs who joined the BJP are Lahkmen Rymbui from Amlarem, Kyrmen Shylla from Khliehriat, Balajied Synrem from Shella, Synsharkupar L Thabah from Sohiong, Olan Singh Suin from Mawsynram, Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah from Mawphlang, Mayralborn Syiem from Nongpoh, and Pius Marwein from Ranikor.
