A suspected crude rocket attack by Kuki armed groups targeted the residence of former Manipur Chief Minister, M. Koireng, in Bishnupur District on Friday afternoon. The attack killed 70-year-old RK Rabei and injured five others, including a 13-year-old girl. The incident occurred during preparations for a ceremony at the residence.
This marks an escalation in violence, with alleged surface-to-surface missiles being used for the first time in the 15-month-long Manipur conflict. The attack follows recent drone strikes on September 1 in Imphal West, which resulted in another fatality.
In response to the increasing unrest, the state government has announced the closure of all schools and colleges on September 7, 2024, to ensure the safety of students and teachers.
Further details are awaited as local authorities, including Moirang MLA Th. Shanti and Minister L. Susindro, assess the situation.
