SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has demanded the transfer of the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) and Deputy Commissioner (DC), saying the move is necessary to ensure an impartial probe into alleged police extortion.
KSU Environment Secretary Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew said the transfer would help prevent any interference in an independent inquiry into the allegations.
The demand follows a sting operation conducted by the KSU at a police checkpoint along the Shillong Bypass near Thangsahlai and Mawkhan on September 30.
The KSU alleged that its members witnessed police personnel collecting money from truck drivers, with payments ranging from ₹200 to ₹500.
While police have maintained that the checkpoint was set up to verify vehicle documents, the KSU claimed its members did not witness any document checking during the operation and instead recorded alleged instances of money being collected from drivers.
The union said it has evidence, including video recordings, and urged the government to take action against the personnel allegedly involved.
The KSU also called for an independent inquiry, stressing that transferring the district’s SP and DC would help ensure that the investigation remains free from influence.
