Shillong: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, who is currently in custody, has been advised to undergo surgery after suffering another episode of nosebleeding, the union said on Monday.

KSU CEC Environment Secretary Shainingstar Kharbihkhiew said Sanmiet’s health condition had worsened after a previous history of nosebleeding, for which he had received treatment at Civil Hospital Shillong in June.

According to Kharbihkhiew, Sanmiet had again developed the condition and was taken to Bethany Hospital for a medical examination. Doctors attending to him subsequently advised surgery to address the problem.

Sanmiet had suffered nosebleeding before his arrest on August 19 in connection with violence during a two-wheeler rally, the KSU said.

The union expressed concern over his health while in custody and said the government should bear responsibility for his medical care and safety.

The KSU warned that the government would have to take responsibility for any untoward incident involving Sanmiet while he remains in custody.

Sanmiet is also pursuing his PhD in the Department of Law at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
